services mission / goals donations, funding, fundraising real life stories volunteering history moonlight bay newsletter annual report

The programs and services offered at Bissell Centre would not be possible without the dedication and energy of our not-so-small army of volunteers! In 2005, 1,250 people volunteered for a total of more than 25,000 hours at Bissell Centre. We provide all of our volunteers with comprehensive orientation and training, ongoing support and recognition. If you would like to give some of your time to help at Bissell Centre, there are a number of different areas you can choose from. Help is always needed!

  • Thrift Store Volunteers help receive and sort donations of household goods and clothing, and prepare these items for sale. This is our most urgent volunteer need just now.
  • Childcare Volunteers help with holding babies, reading stories, cleaning toys, doing laundry and participating in recreational activities. Daytime positions only.
  • Food Room Volunteers receive donations, stack shelves, sort through stock and help make food hampers. Daytime positions only.
  • Drop-in Volunteers help with serving sandwiches, coffee and handing out clothing and toiletries in our Adult Drop-in Centre. Volunteers spend time visiting with people and playing cards or board games. Volunteers must be at least 18. Only daytime positions are available.
  • Resource Development Volunteers assist the Centre in planning fundraising activities. Volunteers attend and help at the activities.
  • Special Event Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve food, provide entertainment, and help with set-up, serving and clean-up at major events like Bissell-ebration, the New Year's Day Dinner, Christmas parties and the Inner City BBQ.
  • Groups of Volunteers are welcome! A project can be tailor-made to suit your group's needs and interests.
